The Spanish beach town loved by Brits that looks more like Brazil

Published on March 29, 2025 at 03:01 PM

A TOWN in Spain has been compared a city in Brazil because of it's huge sandy beach – and famous rockface.

Calpe, in Alicante, is a beach resort on the northern part of Costa Blanca.

It looks just as similar to the beach in Rio too

The long stretch of sand is overlooked by the Peñon de Ifach rock, 332 metres above sea level.

However, the huge rock overlooking the coastline has drawn comparisons to Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio.

They are even similar heights, with Sugarloaf being slightly taller at 391 metres.

Sadly tourists will have to climb Peñon de Ifach rock by foot, while Sugarloaf has a cable car to get to the top.

And the temperatures are unlikely to match with Rio, which is hitting highs of 29C this week compared to Alicante's 20C.

Visit in summer, however, and Alicante hits 31C highs, compared to Rio's 26C.

And for Brits, the Spanish resort is a much cheaper option with £17 flights thanks to easyJet.

Rio is a slightly more expensive option with flights to the Brazilian city from £474 each way.

Also in Calpe is an unusual apartment block which people say looks like something from Squid Games

La Muralla Roja is a bright pink apartment complex, and was said to be the inspiration.

Along with 50 apartments, the winding staircases look like something from Tetris.

And Calpe isn't the only place in Europe that has been compared to Brazil.

San Vito Lo Capo in Sicily also looks similar to the Rio beach, with the huge rock towering over the town.

Some have even said its like “being in the Maldives” because of the blue water.

We've found a spot in Eastern Europe that people say is a miniature Thailand.

If you're staying in the UK, here are some seaside towns that could be abroad.
