Three ways to create affordable egg hunts for the kids this Easter

Published on April 15, 2025 at 08:00 PM

EGG hunting is great fun for kids at Easter.

But buying multiple choc treats to hide can become pricey, if you have several children taking part in the springtime activity.

Instead try these easy tips to create affordable challenges.

SCAVENGER HUNT: Instead of buying and hiding multiple eggs, you can create a scavenger hunt with the prize, once completed, being an egg.

Challenge kids to find some blossom petals or take a bark rubbing, for example.

Hobbycraft has a free scavenger hunt that can be downloaded and printed if you’re struggling for ideas.

Or you could ask a set of questions with the answers hidden around your home or outdoor space.

For instance, how many daffodils can you count in the garden?

POM ALONG: Instead of hiding eggs, try scattering craft pom poms or similar small balls, which can be used as currency for the chocolate treats.

For example, three pom poms equal one egg.

It means you won’t have to hide endless amounts of pricier eggs and you can also keep control of distributing eggs when there are multiple kids.

For example, you could stipulate older children need to find four or five poms per egg. A pack of 150 craft pom poms are £1 from The Works.

MARK IT OUT: Wash and save up the sticks from ice lollies and use them to create markers for the hunt.

Cut out egg-shaped pieces of card and glue them to the sticks. Or Hobbycraft has packs of sticks for £1.

Write out the “start”; of the hunt on one, then pointers such as “this way”; or “look here”; to help make sure eggs aren’t missed.

Buy a bag of mini eggs and put a cople each in plastic refillable eggs — a pack of ten is £1.50 from .
