Five budget-friendly tips to give your home a makeover this spring

Published on March 31, 2025 at 10:45 PM

'I'm a furniture flipper - I've made over £100K' from upcycling strangers' junk

YOU don’t need deep pockets to give your home a stylish makeover this spring.

You just need to join the surging interest in furniture upcycling and restoration.

Follows these tips to give your house an affordable seasonal update . . .

SOFT SAVING: Skip buying a new sofa and give your living room a fresh look with some bright cushion covers.

George at Asda has a brilliant new spring range with colourful cushions from £6.

Alternatively, pick up one of the amazing elastic sofa covers from The Range for £25.99.

The stretchy fabric fits over the sofa, and you just tuck in the edges. It will transform your living room in a flash.

STROKE OF GENIUS: Update old furniture with easy-to-use chalk paint.

A pot of Rustoleum chalky effect matt furniture paint in duck egg blue (£5.50, B&Q) is perfect for adding a little spring feeling.

One pot goes a long way — at least a set of drawers and a side table or two.

SHELF LIFE: No money for new decor?

Use what you have to add some fresh life to a room.

Rearrange bookshelves by colour of the spine.

And for a curated gallery feel, leave space between sections to place an ornament or pretty candle.

No ornaments? Wash and rinse food jars and decorate with any leftover paint dregs you have in the shed.

HANDLE IT: Swapping outdated knobs and handles will give your furniture a new look.

Try sleek brass for modern homes or ceramic knobs for cottage charm.

Visit eBay for lots of brilliant second-hand and antique handles at great prices.

Or upcycle Ikea furniture with new brass-effect cup handles (£6.99 for a set of 24 at Amazon).

FLOWER POWER: Add some blooms for a spring touch.

A good trick to find budget greenery is to search on Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree for neighbours who propagate their own plants and sell the offshoots at cheap prices.

Alternatively, a budget bouquet separated into jars around the house will give you a similar fresh feeling.
