Sundowns to play Pyramids in CAF Champions League final

Published on April 26, 2025 at 08:41 AM

Mamelodi Sundowns will play in the CAF Champions League final, after they played a 1-1 draw with holders Al Ahly on Friday.

A last-gasp own goal from Al Ahly defender Yasser Ibrahim saw the South African side progress after the semi-final second leg.

Sundowns will now take on another Egyptian club, Pyramids, next month for the trophy.

Pyramids came from behind twice to beat Orlando Pirates of South Africa 3-2 thanks to a brace from Fiston Mayele.

The first legs of both semi-finals ended goalless last weekend, handing a major advantage to the two Egyptians clubs who were hosting the return matches.

But the away goal rule proved to be crucial for Sundowns.

Pyramids will play in their first Champions League final in the first leg in Pretoria on May 24 and the return in Cairo on June 1.

Al Ahly, who have long been the dominant force in African club competition, were aiming for a sixth successive final.
