'OMG' say shoppers as they spot major Easter staple weeks ahead of the big day
WITH Easter just weeks away, it’s time to start thinking about which chocolate egg to buy for your loved ones.
There’s a huge selection on offer for 2025 and you are no longer limited to brands like Cadbury and Lindt.
Lynsey Hope puts all the supermarket own-brand Easter eggs to the test
Supermarkets now bring out a number of own-brand eggs and every year, they appear in more extraordinary flavours, shapes and sizes.
To help you choose, Lynsey Hope has tried dozens of eggs in a bid to find the best ones.
Here, she reveals her favourites:
Exceptional by Asda Hazelnut and Blonde Chocolate Egg (200g)
£9.98
£4.99 per 100g
Lynsey said this egg is thick and practically melts in the mouth
A mottled, caramel coloured egg with some dark chocolate swirls on the front for decoration.
The chocolate is lovely and thick and practically melts in the mouth as it's so creamy.
The hazelnut pieces add a lovely crunch and the hazelnut paste makes it super sweet and moreish.
There's a slightly salty aftertaste from the added sea salt.
It's rich but a real taste sensation and costs less than a tenner.

M&S Food Collection Extra Thick Dark Chocolate and Blond Egg (485g)
£20
£4.12 per 100g
This egg was rich and decadent and has a layer of blond truffle inside
Comes in an impressive gift box and I love, love, loved the incredible smell of dark cocoa as you took off the lid.
The egg itself resembles a cocoa bean with a rippled effect on one half.
I had it in my hands for ages, just holding it as it was so smooth and appealing to touch.
It didn't disappoint taste wise.
The dark chocolate was rich and decadent and there's a layer of blond truffle inside as well as caramel pieces, pink Himalayan rock salt and honeycomb.
Incredibly luxurious and though £20 might seem pricey, per 100g it works out better value than many others.
It only cost 13p extra per 100g of chocolate than Lidl‘s egg.”

Waitrose The Cracking Pistachio (320g)
£17
£5.32 per 100g
The Waitrose egg is pricey but would make a lovely gift for pistachio fans
Last year's most talked about egg, this went viral on TikTok.
It's back for a second time but the recipe has been tweaked and it's better.
The creamy blonde shell is smooth, milky and delicious but the hidden pistachio flavoured egg on the inside is speckled with even more pistachio nibs to the flavour is more noticeable than it was and the little crunchy pieces make a lovely contrast to the smooth, velvety chocolate.
It's pricey but beautifully boxed and a lovely gift for pistachio fans.

Aldi Specially Selected White Ripple Egg with Mango and Passion Fruit Crunch (170g)
£4.99
£2.94 per 100g
Aldi's egg has waffle cone crumbs, freeze-dried mango pieces and passion fruit
Aldi's egg looks like it has been squished and despite the exotic flavours, there's no aroma as you open the box.
The white chocolate egg is nice and it has waffle cone crumbs, freeze-dried mango pieces and passion fruit flavoured granules in the shell.
Don't be fooled into thinking it's a healthy option because of the fruity flavours.
1/6 of the egg still contains 151 calories, 9.3g fat and 14.4g sugar.
It's unusual and one of the best for value – but I wouldn't rush back for another.

Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Belgian Milk Chocolate Honeycomb XL Easter Egg
£8
£3.48 per 100g
Sainsbury's egg is similar in taste to a crispy cornflake cake
An elegant egg with a tall, swirled design which is reminiscent in taste of a crispy cornflake cake.
The chocolate is thick with a really smooth texture, a touch of bitterness and a slightly salty after taste.
The chocolate itself was scattered with roasted corn pieces and crunchy honeycomb which gives it a perfect sweet and savoury balance.
Taste wise it was one of my favourites and lots of chocolate to chomp through for your money.
Lidl's egg is plan on the outside but has a secret biscuit flavour filling
This looks quite plain on the outside but has a secret biscuit-flavour filling hidden inside.
Combined with thick and creamy milk chocolate, this makes the egg quite sweet but the design is innovative and I couldn't get tucking back in for more.
The flavour is Biscoff like so if you're a fan of Biscoff, you'll love this. Reasonable value for the quality too.

Waitrose No The Chocolate Croissant Easter Egg (275g)
£15
£5.46 per 100g
The Waitrose egg is shaped like a croissant and is made with blonde chocolate
An exciting addition to the Easter line-up for 2023 is this fun croissant-shaped egg.
There is nothing croissant like in the taste but it's a fun design and the blonde chocolate is a lovely alternative to the classic milk.
It’s much lighter in appearance than it appears on the box, so I was surprised when I opened it up.
Wafer pieces throughout add a buttery flavour and texture, reminiscent of the pastry it's named after.
Top marks for novelty factor.

Tesco Pretzel and Salt Chocolate Egg (280g)
£10
£3.57 per 100g
Tesco's egg is complete with pretzel pieces which give it a lovely crunch
This box is a bit underwhelming compared to the others but actually, this tastes delicious.
The chocolate is super sweet but thanks to the added salt, it isn't too overwhelming.
The little hint of salt balances the flavours beautifully and the egg has a lovely ‘snap‘.
Pretzel pieces are scattered throughout, giving it a lovely crunch and texture.
It's rich, indulgent and incredibly moreish.

Morrisons The Best Belgian Milk Chocolate with Caramel, Pretzel and Honeycomb (240g)
£7.50
£3.15 per 100g
the Morrisons egg looks appealing but is hard to crack into
A beautifully marbled egg that looks appetising but is hard to crack into.
It's sweet and milk and the pretzel and honeycomb pieces add some texture and crunch to make this a little more luxurious.
It is very sweet, but went perfectly with a nice cuppa.
The box was a nice design and I thought it would make a lovely gift.
Great value, too.
