Thorup surprised by Onyeka’s Super Eagles snub

Published on April 14, 2025 at 06:20 AM

Augsburg manager, Jess Thorup has said the decision to leave out Frank Onyeka from Nigeria's squad for last month's 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe came as a surprise to him.

Onyeka, a regular with the Super Eagles was omitted from the 23-man squad by head coach, Eric Chelle.

The midfielder was initially named in an enlarged provisional squad for the qualifiers.

The former FC Midtylland player has featured regularly for Augsburg this season.

Thorup insisted that he is certain Onyeka will be called up for subsequent games.

“Yeah, I think he (Onyeka) has played an amazing season in one of the top leagues in Europe. I was really surprised (that he was not called up to Nigeria’s squad).

“I was sure that Frank was going to be part of it, I was even hoping he would be in the lineup and play form the beginning,” Thorup was quoted by Oma Sports.
