Top retiree calls for supports, prayer for safety of NIS boss battling internal corruption

Published on March 26, 2025 at 01:51 PM

Retired Deputy Comptroller of Immigration and former Special Assistant to Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the former Minister of Interior, Mr. Ime Nta, has lamented the rot in the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and commended the current Comptroller General of Immigration (CGI), K.N. Nandap, for taking the bull by the horns.

Nta, who was a leading crusader against corruption in the NIS before his retirement over four years ago, said the corruption problem within the agency is hydra-headed and requires an iron fist to contain it.

A few days ago, the Comptroller General, Nandap, launched the third Nationwide Sensitization and Awareness Campaign Against Corruption 2025, themed “Increased Digitalization and Consolidated Innovations for Efficient and Transparent Services.”

At that launch, Nandap reaffirmed her commitment to using digitalization and innovative solutions, including technology-driven processes such as the Contactless Passport Application System and the soon-to-be-introduced e-Visa channel, to enhance efficiency and transparency in the service.

According to her, these initiatives will significantly minimize opportunities for corrupt practices.

Nta commended the resolve of the CGI, saying her initiatives, if allowed to flourish, will help tackle corruption in the NIS.

Recalling his ordeal while attempting to fight corruption at his level, he called for support and prayers for the CGI to ensure her protection and enable her to prosecute the war against corruption in the NIS successfully.

According to Nta in an interview, this is the first time a CGI has attempted to tackle internal corruption within the NIS courageously.

“This is the first time that a CGI is attempting to battle corruption in the NIS head-on by bringing corruption to the doorsteps of NIS officers using digital approaches that replace manual processes.

“I appeal that she should be given support, encouragement, and possibly an extension of her term by the higher authorities to enable her to consolidate on her efforts.”

Nta alleged that malpractices still exist in passport administration in the country.

He called for political will, sincerity, and commitment to addressing the fundamental issues in the administration of the nation's security documents.
