The findings, unearthed by the TaxPayers’ Alliance, come as households are today clobbered by an average 5 per cent increase in council tax.

The figures show 1,092 penpushers got £150,000 and above last year compared to 828 the year before.

For those on £200,000 and above, the jump was from 175 to 262.

Best paid last year was Annemarie O’Donnell, chief executive in Glasgow — where council tax is up by 7.5 per cent — who got £567,317 in salary and pension contributions.

Reform chief Nigel Farage claimed councils are “fundamentally broken”;.

He said: “We must send in the auditors, get rid of the fraudulent contracts and cut wasteful spending.”;

John O’Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “It’s a record-breaking year in many respects for taxpayers as the country hurtles towards a record tax burden, all while the public sector continues to feather its nest.

“As our latest town hall rich list demonstrates, the number of council staff with six-figure remuneration packages has surged at the same time that services are being slashed.”;
