Traditional leaders call for dialogue to resolve Tiv/Jukun conflict in Taraba

The Tiv traditional leaders’ Supreme Council in Taraba State has renewed calls for peaceful dialogue as a means of resolving the long-standing conflict between the Tiv and Jukun communities, particularly in southern parts of the state.

In a communiqué issued at the end of a three-day leadership workshop organized for Tiv traditional leaders, the council urged their Jukun counterparts to embrace dialogue in order to reach a common ground and restore lasting peace.

Signed by the chairman, Chief Dr. David Gbaa Tela, and the Secretary, Zaki Targema Ukange, the council commended governor Agbu Kefas for his inclusive leadership, which they said has fostered peace, unity and stability across the state.

“We commend Governor Kefas’ inclusive governance model, which has seen the appointment of several Tiv sons and daughters into key positions. This reflects his commitment to fairness and social justice,”; the council noted.

The Taraba Tiv leaders appealed to the governor to facilitate the swift return of displaced Tivs to their ancestral homes and to accelerate infrastructural development in Tiv communities.

They also called for the establishment of a government-recognized Tiv Central Traditional Leadership, in a capacity the state deems appropriate.

The council resolved that traditional leaders must strive to improve their organizational and conflict resolution capabilities, adopt accountability and integrity in their roles, and incorporate emotional intelligence when addressing community issues.

The council also encouraged the use of modern technology to aid administration, improve communication, and support efficient leadership, while also balancing family obligations to avoid conflicts of interest.

Reiterating the importance of unity and loyalty, the council urged all Tiv people in the state to support the officially recognized traditional leadership.

In the same vein, the council disassociated itself from individuals crowned as Tiv leaders outside of its established guidelines.
