Transgender Ban: Trump’s Pentagon chief blasts judge over latest decision

Published on March 23, 2025 at 12:49 PM

Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth has joined the mounting criticism of federal judges by President Donald Trump and others in his administration on Saturday.

Hegseth mocked the US District Judge Ana Reyes who blocked a ban on transgender troops in the United States military.

He also suggested Reyes was abusing her power by making decisions about war fighting.

Reyes had ruled that Trump's January 27 executive order, one of several issued by the Republican president targeting legal rights for transgender Americans, likely violated the US Constitution's guarantee of equal protection under the law.

However, in a tweet on X, Hegseth mockingly called the judge “Commander Reyes”.

“Since ‘Judge' Reyes is now a top military planner, she/they can report to Fort Benning at 0600 to instruct our Army Rangers on how to execute High Value Target Raids,” Hegseth wrote.

“After that, Commander Reyes can dispatch to Fort Bragg to train our Green Berets on counterinsurgency warfare.”

Reyes was appointed by Democratic former US President Joe Biden.
