Trump envoy in Russia to meet Putin as Iran, China tensions flare

Published on April 11, 2025 at 02:04 PM

United States President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, flew into Russia on Friday.

According to Reuters, Witkoff is likely to hold talks with President Vladimir Putin.

This comes amid a spike in U.S. in tensions between U.S and Moscow's close allies, Iran and China.

The Kremlin confirmed Witkoff's arrival, and a video of him leaving a hotel in St Petersburg, accompanied by Putin's investment envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, has been released.

Putin was also in St Petersburg on Friday to hold a meeting which the Kremlin described as “extraordinarily important” as it concerns the development of the Russian Navy.

If Putin does meet Witkoff, in a third meeting this year, it would come at a time when U.S. relations with Iran and China – two countries with which Russia has close ties – are severely strained over Tehran's nuclear programme and a burgeoning trade war with Beijing.

Witkoff is due to be in Oman on Saturday for talks with Iran over its nuclear programme after Trump threatened Tehran with military action if it does not agree to a deal.
