Trump to impose large scale tariffs on EU, Canada

Published on March 27, 2025 at 01:33 PM

United States President Donald Trump said on Thursday that larger tariffs could be placed on the European Union and Canada if they collaborate to cause economic harm to the U.S.

Trump disclosed this in a post on his Truth Social media account.

“If the European Union works with Canada in order to do economic harm to the USA, large-scale tariffs, far larger than currently planned, will be placed on them both in order to protect the best friend that each of those two countries has ever had,”; Trump said.

This comes after newly appointed Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated on Wednesday that his country would soon respond to new tariffs on imported vehicles announced by Trump and could impose retaliatory measures against the United States.

Carney said Trump's move was a direct attack, adding that he would convene a high-level cabinet meeting on Thursday to decide on a response.

“We will defend our workers, we will defend our companies, we will defend our country, and we will defend it together,” Carney said.

Canada had already announced a package of retaliatory tariffs totaling C$155 billion, which it said would be imposed in stages depending on Trump's actions.
