Two men sentenced to death for murder in Plateau

A Plateau State High Court has sentenced Thomas Danboyi and Pam Lang to death by hanging for their roles in the 2010 murder of Chung Bot in Tahai Gyel Bukuru, Jos South Local Government Area.

Delivering the judgment on Wednesday, Chief Judge David Gwong Mann ruled that the prosecution had proven beyond reasonable doubt that the duo conspired to kill Bot.

“The evidence before this court is conclusive and leaves no room for doubt. The defendants are found guilty of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide,”; Justice Mann declared.

The prosecution, led by Plateau State Attorney General P.A. Daffi, told the court that the crime took place on April 26, 2010, when the convicts, along with others still at large, attacked the victim and his family while they were working on their farm. Witnesses testified that Danboyi restrained Bot while Lang repeatedly struck him on the head with a stick. Bot was later rushed to Plateau Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Although the defense pleaded for leniency, arguing that the accused were responsible family men who had conducted themselves well during the trial, the court upheld the mandatory death sentence for culpable homicide.

However, in a partial concession, the judge sentenced the convicts to three years in prison for conspiracy instead of the maximum penalty.

The case, which has spanned over a decade, has drawn widespread attention, with many seeing the verdict as a strong statement against violent crime.

The convicts have the right to appeal the ruling, but unless overturned by a higher court, the sentence stands.
