UK residents warned over killer ‘bone-breaker’ virus

Published on March 27, 2025 at 06:42 PM

Officials in the UK have warned travellers to take precautions to avoid contracting the deadly dengue virus.

The Mail reports that data revealed that a record number of cases were imported into Britain last year.

Dengue patients often experience a bout of fever, followed by severe headache, pain in the eyes, joints and muscles as well as nausea and vomiting.

The disease was historically known as ‘breakbone fever' in the 1700s, because the pain it caused was so severe people felt like their bones were breaking.

Data claimed that since landing in the UK, it surged to 904 in 2024 – the highest level ever recorded.

The virus is spread by mosquito bites while overseas.

An expert in public health at the UK Health Security Agency UKHSA, Dr Philip Veal, said: “Simple steps, such as using insect repellent, covering exposed skin, and sleeping under insecticide-treated bed nets, can effectively reduce the risk of mosquito-borne infections.

“Before you travel, check the TravelHealthPro website for the latest health advice on your destination, including any recommended vaccinations.

“Even if you’ve been to a country before, remember that you don’t have the same level of protection against infections as permanent residents and are still at risk.”
