US Black Sea Deal: EU gives conditions to end sanctions on Russia

Published on March 26, 2025 at 08:06 PM

The European Union, EU, has told Russia that there will be no end to the sanctions it is currently facing until Moscow withdraws its soldiers from Ukraine.

This is in response to reports of Russia seeking sanctions relief as part of a maritime ceasefire in Ukraine.

Recall that the US announced on Tuesday that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to “eliminate the use of force”; in the Black Sea after parallel talks in Saudi Arabia.

However, Russia has insisted that a maritime ceasefire would start only if it received sanctions relief on agricultural exports.

Donald Trump said that the US was reviewing the Russian conditions.

If that happens it would mark the first major recision of sanctions on Russia since the full-scale invasion of 2022.

The EU said in a statement reported by Reuters on Wednesday, that one of its main preconditions would be to see “the unconditional withdrawal of all Russian military forces”; from Ukraine.

He said “The end of the Russian war with Ukraine and unconditional withdrawal of all Russian military forces from the entire territory of Ukraine would be one of the main preconditions to amend or lift sanctions.

The spokesperson added that “Russia must now demonstrate genuine political will to end its illegal and unprovoked war of aggression.”;

She also pointedly noted that “experience has shown that Russia must be judged by its actions, not by its words.”;
