US Peace deal: What Zelenskyy told me – Trump opens up on Vatican meeting

Published on April 28, 2025 at 05:33 AM

President of the United States of America, Donald Trump has revealed details of his meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Vatican.

The US president revealed that the Ukrainian leader demanded for more weapons from the US government.

Zelenskyy met with Donald Trump during the burial of Pope Francis at the Vatican on Friday.

Addressing the press on Sunday, Trump sympathised with Zelenskyy, saying he “wants to do something good for his country”; and “is working hard”;.

Both men were captured sitting face to face with each other as they discussed issues surrounding the war and Trump reflected on his conversation with the Ukrainian president, saying he was “surprised and disappointed, very disappointed”; that Russia had bombed Ukraine after discussions between president Vladimir Putin, and Trump’s peace envoy, Steve Witkoff.

“I was very disappointed that missiles were flying, by Russia,”; the US president said.

Trump, however, seemed to have not yielded to some of Zelenskyy's demands when he (Trump) spoke to reporters at an airport in New Jersey.

He said that Zelenskyy “told me that he needs more weapons, but he’s been saying that for three years”;.

Speaking further on what he wants from Putin, Trump said, “Well, I want him to stop shooting. Sit down and sign the deal. We have the confines of a deal, I believe, and I want him to sign it and be done with it.”

Asked if he trusts President Putin, the US leader said, “I’ll let you know in about two weeks.

“Two weeks or less. But you know they’re losing a lot of people. We have 3, 4,000 people dying every week.”;

On his relationship with Zelenskyy, Trump added, “Look, it was never bad. We had a little dispute, because I disagreed with something he said, and the cameras were rolling and that was OK with me.

“Look, he’s in a tough situation, a very tough situation. He’s fighting a much bigger force, much bigger.

“I see him as calmer. I think he understands the picture, and I think he wants to make a deal.”;
