US President, Donald Trump has appointed Jay Clayton, as interim United States attorney for the Southern District of New York.
Trump disclosed this in a post on his Truth Social media handle on Wednesday night.
The Republican also thanked Clayton, who was a former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, for accepting the new role.
Trump said: “I am pleased to announce that Jay Clayton will serve as the Interim United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.
“The Southern District needs strong leadership NOW, and I thank Jay for taking on this role while we continue to pursue his Senate confirmation.”
Clayton was the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission during Trump's first tenure as President of US.
Last November, Trump announced his intention to nominate Clayton for the Southern District of New York role.
Clayton's nomination received wide and Bipartisan support.
Meanwhile, the Southern District leads the Department of Justice’s oversight over Financial Markets.
It also fights for the safety of millions of New Yorkers and the millions of people who visit New York yearly.
