Utah becomes first US state to ban fluoride in drinking water

Published on March 28, 2025 at 05:25 PM

Utah Governor Spencer Cox has signed a bill making the state the first in the nation to ban fluoride in drinking water.

The bill, which was signed on Thursday, bans the addition of the mineral to the public water supply, a practice commonly done to reduce tooth decay.

The governor announced that the ban will take effect on May 7, 2025.

The bill prohibits communities from adding fluoride to public water supplies across the state.

It also bans the enactment and enforcement of ordinances that require the addition of fluoride to water systems.

Additionally, the bill prohibits pharmacists from prescribing fluoride supplements to individuals.

The ban follows concerns raised by federal health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has expressed skepticism about water fluoridation.
