I’m a vet & why I advise against a popular family dog – they’re lovable but surprisingly dumb

Published on March 26, 2025 at 11:34 AM

A VET has revealed which popular dog breed he advises against for specific reasons that may not suit some families.

Amir Anwary has amassed a huge following of 764,000 TikTok followers by regularly sharing videos and offering advice to pet owners about their dog.

In one of his latest videos, he cautioned against getting a golden retriever.

Amir, who is known as @amirthevet on TikTok, explained that golden retrievers are your “typical family dog”; due to their “loving, affectionate”; and “very trainable”; nature.

However, he adds: “If you are looking for a guard dog, look somewhere else.

“A golden retriever is quite literally the opposite of a guard dog.”;

The reasoning behind this is that golden retrievers “will love other people as much as they love you.”;

He continues: “So if you are getting robbed at three in the morning, your golden retriever will quite literally walk the robber into your house and show them where all the good stuff is.”;

Amir also revealed that golden retrievers are “quite clever”; but “pretty dumb.”;

This means you can expect them to get stuck in odd places or do really silly things that leave you wondering what they are thinking.

Additionally, Amir says that golden retrievers are “water-obsessed.”;

He adds: “Whether it’s clean water, dirty water, cold water, or freezing cold water, they will get into it – and you’ll have to clean them afterwards.”;

This means that if you don’t like the smell of wet dog or don’t want to clean your dog twice a week, then a golden retriever is probably not the best choice.

Amir also points out: “Golden retrievers have a beautiful, majestic coat, which means you’re going to have to vacuum your house almost every single day to keep it clean.

“So if you’re one of those neat freaks who hates it when your house isn’t perfectly spotless, a golden retriever is probably not for you.”;

Amir’s video has gained over 70,000 views, with more than 350 people rushing to the comments section to share their thoughts.

One person said: “We like to refer to the shedding as spreading golden glitter.”;

A second added: “One of my goldens is the most beautiful, empty-headed dog. The other one is just the sweetest angel.”;

And a third commented: “You forgot to mention that their ears don’t work until they are about three years old, especially in public!”;
