As part of a software upgrade, will no longer support several models once used by millions of people.

Although the affected models are older there are still a small percentage of people using them today.

At the moment, any iPhone that has iOS 12 or newer can use WhatsApp.

But from May 5 it's all about to change.

Only iOS versions 15.1 and newer will be able to use WhatsApp.

There are three iPhones that are too old to update to iOS 15.

These are:

  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus

If you own one of these iPhones, after May 5 you will no longer be able to send or receive messages on WhatsApp.

It's worth noting that these models stopped receiving major updates from a while back.

This not only means you miss out on new features.

But important security updates to protect you from may be limited too.

Other apps, such as and , have already stopped working on these phones as well.

The oldest of the bunch, the iPhone 5s, was released way back in 2013.

So to keep yourself safe, gain access to the newest features and to keep using WhatsApp, it might be time to upgrade your iPhone.

“Devices and software change often, so we regularly review what operating systems we support and make updates,” WhatsApp says.

“Every year we look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest users.

“These devices also might not have the latest security updates, or might lack the functionality required to run WhatsApp.

“Before we stop supporting your operating system, you'll be notified in WhatsApp and reminded a few times to upgrade.”
