Netflix's new deal with Sony is set to start paying dividends for fans of the streaming platform starting at the top of 2022. Among the titles listed to make the streamer their home after their theater release is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2.
The sequel to the Oscar-winning animated movie will return audiences to the world of Miles Morales, the teenage spidey who takes up the mantle after the Peter Parker in his universe dies tragically.
Expertly blending both 2D and 3D animation, 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a comics-inspired blast of riotous color that enthralled viewers with its visuals and compelling coming-of-age adventure story.
The film sadly left Netflix in December of 2020 just before Christmas day, but we're hoping the Sony deal will see the movie's return to the platform in 2022 along with its sequel.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 release date
Effective January 1, 2022, new Sony films released in theaters will have an 18-month window where they stream exclusively on Netflix. Deadline reports the deal includes select Sony library rights including previous entries to franchises the company has already established.
New installments of the Spider-Man, Bad Boys, Jumanji, and Venom universes could be finding their home at Netflix as well if Sony makes more films for those franchises. It's that clause in the deal that has us thinking Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse could be making its return to the streamer.
If it does, Miles Morales fans may be able to stream the fledgling superhero's story back-to-back on Netflix come the winter of next year. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 swings into theaters Thursday, October 7, 2022.
Successful films, which this sequel will no doubt be, can take up to three months to be released digitally. However, we wouldn't be surprised if the second film in this spidey series landed on the platform at the tail end of December just in time for the close of 2022.
If not at the end of 2022, we'll definitely see the movie on Netflix in early 2023.
