Meanwhile, Sunday's (March 23) episode marked the end of the latest series.

Viewers haven't been kept in the dark for long about the ITV show's future.

Taking to X, the show's account penned: “That’s it for tonight and the current series!

The latest instalment saw a player miss out on a staggering amount of money.

Self-proclaimed adrenaline junkie Paul Sharpe, from Finsbury Park, North London, took to the hotseat.

During his game, Paul took a fair few risks – making several wild guesses with very little to base his rationale on.

This ultimately paid off, however, for the majority of his time under the spotlight.

Even Jeremy was impressed by his courage and said: “I can't remember ever having a contestant like you.”

Paul made his way up the board to £64,000 with a £32,000 safety net.

From there, he had the potential to win another £93,000 when he made it to the £125,000 question.

But he stumbled when asked about US state capitals.

The question posed: “Which of these is not the name of a US state capital?”

Paul was given the options: A) Lincoln, B) Richmond, C) Cambridge or D) Dover.

He was flummoxed on the question, telling Jeremy: “I'm pretty sure that Cambridge is the state capital of Massachusetts.”

“I think Dover is in the Mid West somewhere, so my gut feeling says Richmond,” Paul said, but with two lifelines gone he decided to call his dad, Dennis.

Dennis was pretty confident that the answer was Dover and when his son asked if he was sure he said: “Pretty sure.”

“That's the kind of person you want on the other end of the phone – clear, decisive, possibly wrong but who knows,” Jeremy laughed.

Joking about his game playing, Paul said: “I've been guessing stuff based on less than that before. Dover, final answer.”

To his horror, Jeremy grimaced: “Oh you've done it again, and you've just lost £32,000.”

The correct answer was Cambridge.

Who has won the jackpot on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire has offered hundreds of hopeful contestants the chance to become millionaires, but there has only been a handful of lucky winners.

There have only been five real winners so far on the show asCharles Ingram, who was the third winner ofWho Wants To Be A Millionaire?in 2001, had his claim to the prize thrown out because of cheating allegations.

The official winners are…

Judith Keppel

  • In 2000, garden designer Judith Keppel made quiz show history as she became the first ever winner of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. Judith is also the only woman ever to have won the million-pound prize.

David Edwards

  • Former physics teacher David became the second contestant to win the top prize in April 2001. Following his success, Edwards went on to compete in both series of Are You an Egghead? in 2008 and 2009.

Robert Brydges

  • Oxford-educated banker Robert became the third Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? champion when he won the quiz show several moths after David in 2001. Robert has stayed out of the limelight since his win.

Pat Gibson

  • World champion Irish quiz player Pat won the show in 2004. Amazingly Pat had TWO of his lifelines still available for his final question, something no other winner has managed.

Ingram Wilcox

  • Ingram came close to losing on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in 2006 as he had used all his lifelines up at the £32,000 mark, but in a shocking twist he went on to scoop the jackpot.

“I'm so sorry. Lady Luck has ridden off,” the presenter said.

Paul replied: “No problem at all. I'd never have guessed Cambridge in a million years,”

Pointing out the bright side of the situation, Jezza said: “Look at it this way, you're winning £32,000.”

One viewer wrote on X: “Who wants to be a millionaire and the guys doing brilliant until his phone a friend, rings his Dad, uses his answer and loses £32k.”
