Stranger Things season 3 premiered in the summer of 2019 and was a massive hit. Netflix quickly renewed the series for season 4 and announced the news a few months later. Since then, fans have been waiting — rather impatiently, I might add — for Stranger Things season 4.
Well, it’s been nearly two years since we saw season 3, and there’s still no sign of Stranger Things season 4 coming to Netflix anytime soon.
What gives? Where is Stranger Things season 4? When is the Stranger Things season 4 release date?
Is Stranger Things season 4 on Netflix?
Unfortunately, no, but that’s the only bad news about Stranger Things you’ll find here!
Stranger Things season 4 is still in the works. It’s been confirmed, and not canceled or anything like that.
This week, David Harbour shared a video from his trailer on the set of season 4. Obviously, the cast and crew are hard at work on the new season, so what’s taking so long?
As you may have noticed from Netflix’s new releases, there aren’t too many well-known shows returning for new seasons in the first, really, half of 2021, and that’s simply because production was delayed so long. The pandemic caused production stoppages all over the world.
Of the shows affected, Stranger Things was hit rather hard. Production on season 4 started in early 2020 with some of the cast, crew, and the creative team heading to Lithuania. They came back and started filming season 4 in Atlanta in February or March 2020. Then, production shut down mid-March and remained that way until, like, the fall of 2020. We can’t say when exactly things got going officially, but it looks like it was late September or early October that some of the cast and crew started working again.
So, that’s the main reason Stranger Things season 4 isn’t on Netflix. The pandemic and work stoppage threw a major wrench in the gears. And, since, things just haven’t been the same. There are restrictions for how many people can be close together in scenes together and off camera. There’s regular testing for the cast and crew for the virus.
Gaten Matarazzo, who stars as Dustin, recently told fans that things are moving more slowly than usual. He also mentioned in a recent interview with Collider that filming has been much different with uncertain scheduling.
Caleb McLaughlin, who stars as Lucas, recently told Teen Vogue that scenes are being filmed way out of order because they can’t film scenes with extras or big groups.
“Everything is backwards because of Covid. If there is a scene with extras, we can’t film with everyone right now. We have to only film scenes where there are fewer people, so we have to start from a later episode. We won’t start at episode one, we will start at episode five.”
In other words, you can blame the pandemic for being the reason Stranger Things season 4 is not on Netflix. And, because things were delayed so long, it’s not looking like we’ll get to see Stranger Things season 4 much before the end of 2021, if at all this year.
