Why President shouldn’t enjoy immunity without VP – Shehu Sani

Published on March 26, 2025 at 05:50 PM

Former federal lawmaker, Shehu Sani has suggested why the president alone should not enjoy immunity without the vice president.

Sani said it can be used to witch hunt whoever is the vice president.

The statement comes after a bill to remove the immunity enjoyed by the vice president and governors scaled second reading at the House of Representatives.

The bill was among 42 other constitutional amendment bills that passed second reading on the floor of the green chamber of the National Assembly on Wednesday.

It removed the immunity conferred on the vice president, governors, and their deputies to curb corruption, eradicate impunity, and enhance accountability in public office.

However, in a post on his X handle on Wednesday, Sani claimed that positive aspects of removing immunity for VP and governors is that nobody will be above the law.

He said: “The positive aspects of removing immunity for VP and Governors is that nobody will be above the law; the negative aspect of it is that it can be used to witch hunt VPs and Governors. If a VP should have no immunity, whoever is the President should not have it also. There is a bill in the House of Reps that has now scaled second reading. You need to show interest in it before it’s too late.”
