Why UK should not engage in trade war with US – Kemi Badenoch

Published on April 01, 2025 at 12:51 PM

Leader of the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch has given a reason why the UK should not engage in a trade war with the United States.

Badenoch spoke to journalists on Tuesday, while speaking about US President Donald Trump's impending tariffs on UK.

According to her, a trade war between US and UK would make everybody poorer.

“We should not be engaging in a trade war or tit-for-tat retaliation – that makes everybody poorer,” Badenoch said as quoted by Sky News.

When asked for her solution to avoid a trade war, she said: “UK-US trade deal ASAP”.

Recall that Trump had last Friday said he was open to carving out deals with countries seeking to avoid US tariffs, but those agreements would have to be negotiated after his administration announces reciprocal levies on April 2.

The US President said countries including Britain had approached the United States to try to cut deals and avert the reciprocal tariffs.

On Sunday, British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer and Trump discussed negotiations towards a UK-US economic prosperity deal.

The two leaders had the discussion in a phone call on Sunday evening.

They said negotiations would continue this week and agreed to stay in touch in the coming days.
