World Cup 2022: Tomori is ahead of him – Wilshere slams Southgate over Man United defender

Published on November 12, 2022 at 01:16 AM

Former Arsenal star, Jack Wilshere, has questioned Gareth Southgate’s decision to include Manchester United’s Harry Maguire in his World Cup squad.

Despite his poor run of form, Maguire has kept his place in Southgate’s starting XI and played a key role in the Three Lions’ run to the final of Euro 2020.

The former Leicester City’s defender has started only one Premier League game since August, with Lisandro Martinez taking his place in Erik ten Hag’s side.

Erik ten Hag dropped the England international to the bench after their two games against Brighton and Brentford with Ten Hag preferring to stick with Martinez and France international Raphael Varane in the heart of his defence.

Wilshere feels that AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori, who has excelled for the Italian side since leaving Chelsea, should have been chosen instead.

He told talkSPORT: “It’s tough because I can see a club manager having favourites, but I think it’s hard doing that internationally.

“He will play. Harry will play, that’s almost 100 per cent because of the way that Gareth sees him.

“It’s difficult to have favourites at international level.”;
